Front End Developer
I can not detail this role better than this article http://www.onlinetools.org/articles/fed2.html but I will attempt to summarise what a FE Developer does.
This is a simplistic view. I work in a team called the User Interface Team (UI Team), within this team we have Designers and Developers.
A designer will create a picture of a website called a 'Mockup' or simply 'Mock' and I have to translate that into a website.
A Designer designs things, a Developer makes them a reality. I am a Developer, as you can see by my title.
I develop websites which are used by businesses and consumers, these are two very different customers.
I write XHTML and style it using CSS. I must ensure that any alterations to existing code, and when creating new code, it must be standard compliant, cross browser and accessible.
I can not simply drag and drop objects from a tool bar into a blank page using a WYSISYG editor such as Dream Weaver (though this is used from time to time).
Doing so simply can not create code as cleanly structured or marked up as I can.
I need to ensure that other people in the team to be able to understand what I have written, and what was achieved by my development when they come to update what I have developed.
I also have to create the graphical elements of the sites I develop. I must know how to use graphics applications to create logos, buttons, borders, backgrounds, animations in accordance with the Designer's mock.
